Chapter Eleven
Shaylee’s lips were velvet soft, and he wanted her to kiss every inch of him. Or he could kiss every inch of her. It didn’t matter, as long as he got to have her here, her body pressed against his, her hands caressing his cheeks, his neck, his shoulders. He tugged her onto his lap, and when she tried to wriggle free, he kissed her long and hard until she melted against his chest.
“You’re dangerous, Detective.” She bit her bottom lip as she regarded him.
He ran his finger along that wonderful lip until she kissed his fingertip.
“Harmless,” he whispered.
“Yeah, right. You need a warning label.” She ran her hand through her mane of golden-brown hair.
Dax gestured to himself as if to say, Me?
“You.” She poked him in the chest, and he caught her hand. He pressed his lips to the back of that hand, then wove his fingers between hers, holding her hand against his heart. Her bottom resting on his lap made him wish to God they were naked.
Not tonight, he reminded himself. But maybe some night soon.
She shifted off his lap and settled on the couch a short distance away. “You made me miss the crossing of the Delaware.” She pointed to the TV where the guy dressed as George Washington was now freezing his balls off at Valley Forge.
Dax picked up the remote and rewound to the river crossing part. He studied Shaylee’s profile as she watched the TV. Her face was a masterpiece. Smooth curves, satin skin, healthy glow. She put those makeup ad models to shame. Hers was a natural beauty, an innate loveliness that was pulling him toward her. He didn’t want to fight it. Didn’t want to push it aside. He wanted to dive in, swim far away from shore, and get lost with her.
His gaze rested on her phone that had fallen between his legs when he’d pulled her onto his lap. He fished it out and shook his head. Why was he thinking of being with her when he couldn’t utter a sentence to her above the volume of a faint, grating whisper? Couldn’t go for a long walk with her. Couldn’t stand beside her under his own power. She worked with people in tough shape every day. She didn’t need to be involved with one in her personal life. She couldn’t possibly want that.
Still, he hoped.
“Did you know that a key strategy for the Continental Army was to hide behind stone walls and trees and then surprise the British with gunfire?” Shaylee asked as snow beat down on the ragged colonial troops on the TV.
Dax nodded. Surprise attack was always a good strategy. Hell, it had worked for fucking DiNoble. Didn’t work so well for him, however.
“The British weren’t used to such fighting. They always fought in straight lines, facing their opponents straight on, but fighting from hidden locations…” Shaylee’s voice dropped off. “Sorry, I’m doing it again. You didn’t ask for a history lesson. In fact, you just told me you already knew all this.
